Private day tour to Plovdiv city center and Hissarya

Do you know that a city located in Bulgaria was named one of the European Capitals of Culture from 2019? Yes, and it no other but the beautiful city of Plovdiv.

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and is considered as one of the oldest cities in the world. During the years, it developed and expanded over seven hills and Bulgarians now know it as the City of the Seven Hills.Plovdiv went through different stages as it was conquered and ruled by the Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Bulgarian Revival, etc. Even still it has been an important economic and cultural centre in each period.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the city is the old town of Plovdiv. As you are strolling down the small cobblestone streets, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful and colorful houses with traditional Bulgarian Architectural style from the 19th century. Many of them are now made into museums, so you can walk in and learn more about the Bulgarian history. You will also notice small galleries and craft shops, so make sure to get a souvenir from this outstanding place. The small streets will inevitably take you to the Ancient Theatre. Even though that parts of the theatre were destroyed during the years, it is still used nowadays for different performances.

Another popular spot among locals is Kapana. This area dates back to the Ottoman Empire when it was used for a marketplace. Back in the times, the streets of Kapana were home to different crafts - pottery making, gold making, furriery, etc. In the past, this area in Plovdiv was neglected but approximately 5 years ago it was completely renovated and transformed into the art hipster district of the city. Many different bars, restaurants and craft shops are now open in the Kapana District. Various events and art festivals are also held there.

The day tour around Bulgaria continues with another spot popular from the Roman Times. Hisarya is just a small town in Bulgaria, but it hold the impressive walls of the ancient Roman city Diocletianopolis. In 293, the Romans started constructing the city with wide streets, public buildings, villas, baths, tombs, etc. Later on, during the Ottoman Empire the name of the city changed to Hisarya - hissar meaning fortress in Arabic - and it has not been changed ever since.

With more than 22 hot mineral spring waters, Hisarya is now a popular SPA resort among Bulgarians. The water is also believed to have healing effects and a lot of people visit the town to treat different diseases. Combined with the beautiful and peaceful green parks, Hisarya is very well known and a prefered location for relaxation and escape from the hectic city life.

The entire region around Hisarya is also popular for the wine production and a few wineries in the area offer wine-tasting. So, if you are a wine lover, you should certainly try the tradition Bulgarian wine straight from its origin.

Book your private day tour to experience some of the most popular towns during the Roman Times. The cities offer an interesting fusion of modern and ancient.
