Private day tour from Borovets to Etara in Gabrovo and Tsarevets fortress in Veliko Tarnovo
The best way to immerse yourself into Bulgarian history and culture is to visit one of the most outstanding open air museums in the country - the Architectural and Ethnographic Complex Etar. Established during the 1960s, its aim is to represent the life, habits, culture, traditions and architecture of the Bulgarian population during the period of 18th and 19th Century. If you are in Varna and plan to do a special day trip, those are interesting things to see.
The complex is unique in its nature as it demonstrates the only collection of water-driven technical installations in the country. The high number of watermills, grindstones, filling mills and other antiquated machinery which are examined in the complex make the Ethno Village Etar one of the most outstanding open air museums of such type in Europe.
The Complex tries to present the unique features of Bulgarian history in an authentic and original way. Hence, almost 20 buildings were built on the commercial street in the Etar, which are exact copies of houses, which existed in the past in the nearby town Gabrovo and the region. These houses serve as craft shops with real time shows. The visitors are able to enjoy and even get to try various activities such as pottery making, sugar manufacturing, hand making of bells for animals, furrieray and much more.
Walking down the cobblestone streets of the Architectural and Ethnographic Complex Etar will take you back in time many years ago. This historic and cultural village is not only extremely educational for small children but it is a great choice for a fun family trip.
To make the day even more memorable, your experienced driver will take you to one more extraordinary tourist site - Tsarevets. Located on a hill in Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval Tsarevets Fortress is peacefully dominating the sky and the city beneath. With history, which dates as far back as the 3rd millennium BC, the complex was once home not only to the tsar and its royal palace but also more than 400 houses, 18 churches and many more. Thanks to the meandering Yantra River beneath and the high hill, the locations was used as defensive position and high walls, three gates and many towers were built to protect the royal palace.
Unfortunately, a large portion of the complex was destroyed but tourists are still able to stroll down the cobblestone streets of the ancient town and the remains of the buildings. The panoramic city views from the top are absolutely outstanding and worth the walk uphill.
Nowadays, Tsarevets fortress is considered an Architecture and Museum Reserve with supreme importance to Bulgarian history.

Both museums are remarkable in their characteristics and you will not be disappointed with what you will get to learn about Bulgaria.
