The Rila Monastery is a staturopical monastery located in Southwest Bulgaria, Rila mountain. It was founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan Rilski, in the upper reaches of the Rilska River. The Rila Monastery is one of the most significant cultural monuments in Bulgaria, a symbol of Bulgaria, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The current monastery is located near the village of Pastra - not far from the site of its original construction. Rilska River flows along it. This is the largest monastery in Bulgaria - 5 floors, with 4 of them visible. This feature of the building is explained by the restrictions imposed by the Ottoman authorities in 1834 when the current buildings were built. The museum is located on the ground floor.

Stob Pyramids are rock formations with an average height of about 10 meters (some of them reaching 12 meters). They are located at 600-750 meters above sea level in the western part of the Rila Mountain - in the Kulski rid and Tsurkvichoto locality, above the village of Stob.

The Stob's pyramids are weakly neogene-quaternary sandstones and conglomerates formed in the last 1-2 million years. Their colors varies between yellow and brown. They have a varied shape, but most are conical and end with a stone "chapel", resembling mushrooms. Over time, the cone supporting these "chapels" tightens and finally the crown tilts and falls, erosion sharpening and begins to decrease the height of the pyramid. At the same time, other new entities emerge.

Additional information

You get picked up early in the morning from your hotel, driven to your destination and then taken back, with all expenses of travel included in the price of the trip.
