The mountain town of Chiprovtsi is a combination of the colors of the Chiprovtsi carpets, the heroic history, the beautiful nature, the delicious cuisine, the northern music, and the old monasteries. Chiprovtsi carpets are hand-woven carpets made by the women of Chiprovtsi in north-eastern Bulgaria. Since 2014 they are part of UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Almost every household in the town contains a vertical handloom, which the women use to make two-sided carpets traditionally utilized as floor coverings.

The naturally dyed yarn gives soft pastel carpet hues. The finished carpets are renowned for their composition, ornamental motifs, and color. Carpet weaving goes hand in hand with beliefs, verbal formulae, and ritual practices. The weavers say prayers and make wishes for success before starting a new carpet, and sing and tell stories while working at the loom. In the Historical Museum in Chiprovtsi, we will see some of the most brilliant examples of Chiprovtsi carpets. Later we will attend a demonstration on weaving a traditional Chiprovtsi carpet. The beautiful fabrics were once made only in Chiprovtsi but spread throughout the Ottoman Empire. Currently, a square meter of the famous Chiprovtsi carpets is estimated at about BGN 250-300, but the older ones are significantly more expensive.

Craft beer, history and Chiprovtsi monastery
We continue with a beer tour with kraft beer, prepared by the youngest brewer in Bulgaria. Live “Chiprovtsi beer” is brewed from malt, hops, yeast, and water using the classic technology described in the German Beer Purity Act of 1516. In the local History Museum, we will see examples of the mining tradition. The first hall presents separate stages of mining and ore processing are presented with an emphasis on the new technologies brought by the Saxon miners.

In the second hall are shown works of the Chiprovtsi goldsmith school (XVI-XVII century) and their distribution on a European scale. The third hall presents the place and role of Catholicism in the life of the people of Catholic clergy. Chiprovtsi in the 17th century – educational activities, diplomatic and missionary activities of the local.
The tour ends with a visit to the Chiprovtsi Monastery, built by Bulgarian Catholics in the 10th century.
