Sofia to Burgas Taxi Transfer on the Trakia Motorway: Time, Stops and Prices

Many people heading for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast land in Sofia, because that is where the flight was cheaper or the only one that day. The good news: the road from Sofia to Burgas is the easiest long drive in the country, almost all of it on the Trakia motorway, with no mountain passes. This guide covers what travellers ask us before the trip – how long it really takes, where we stop, when to leave and what it costs to get off earlier or carry on past Burgas.

The fare from Sofia Airport is the same as from an address in Sofia. It is for the whole car, not per person – four people in a car pay €55 each – and it does not change at night or with traffic.

The Burgas price list starts at Burgas Airport, and the fare to Sofia is the same in both directions. If you are leaving from a hotel in a resort north or south of Burgas, tell us when you book and we will confirm the price straight away.

The route

From Sofia the car joins the Trakia motorway (A1) and runs east across the Thracian plain: past Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Chirpan and Stara Zagora, then Nova Zagora and Yambol, and on towards Karnobat and Burgas. The price list gives about 390 km and 4h15 door to door.

Distances from Sofia along the way, from the price list:

• Plovdiv – about 150 km, 1h45. Roughly the first third of the trip.
• Stara Zagora – about 240 km, 2h45. From here it is about an hour and a half to Burgas.
• Nova Zagora – about 260 km, shortly after Stara Zagora.
• Karnobat – about 345 km, 3h30. The last town before the sea.

Where do we stop?

You can do the trip without stopping, but most people want at least one break after a flight. The motorway has fuel stations and rest areas in both directions. All our drivers speak English – just say when you would like a coffee or a toilet stop and the driver pulls in where it is convenient and safe. With small children, plan two short breaks.

Arriving at Sofia Airport

Send us your flight number when you book. We track the flight, so if it lands late the driver is still there when you come out. On request the driver can meet you with a name sign in the arrivals hall. From there you go straight to the motorway – no bus to the city centre, no train change, no luggage on platforms.

When to leave

• Early morning. Leave Sofia around 6–7 am and you are in Burgas before lunch.
• Summer weekends. The motorway to the coast is busiest on Friday afternoons, and the road back to Sofia on Sunday afternoons. A Saturday morning or a weekday is calmer.
• Roadworks. Sections of the Trakia motorway are often under repair, with one lane open. The driver knows the road and leaves some spare time.
• At night. We drive 24/7 and night transfers cost the same – handy after a late landing in Sofia.

Flight from Sofia. Leave Burgas at least 7 hours before an international departure: about 4h15 on the road, a break and time for check-in. The fare to Sofia Airport is the same €220 by car.
