Sozopol is the old fishing town on a rocky peninsula south of Burgas: cobbled lanes, wooden houses, small beaches and fish restaurants by the harbour. It is a favourite with people who live in Sofia and Plovdiv, and with visitors who want something quieter than the big resorts, in summer and in the mild days of September. Public transport only gets you to Burgas, and from there you still need a bus or a taxi with your luggage. Most of the trip is on the Trakia motorway (A1): from Sofia past Pazardzhik and Plovdiv, then past Stara Zagora, Nova Zagora and Yambol to Burgas. There the car skirts the city to the south and follows the coast road past Chernomorets into Sozopol. From Plovdiv the route is identical, about 130 km shorter. The last stretch from Burgas is an ordinary two-lane road and is slower than the motorway in summer.

When to leave earlier
Summer Fridays. The motorway to the coast is busy from midday. An early start makes for a calmer drive.
The road into Sozopol in July and August. It passes several beaches and is often slow in the afternoon.
Sunday afternoons. Everyone who came for the weekend drives back.
Autumn and winter fog. Mornings on the plain around Stara Zagora and Yambol can be foggy.
The times are without breaks. If a landlord is meeting you with the keys at a set time, tell us when you book.
Old town or new town?
Sozopol has two parts. The old town sits on the peninsula, with narrow cobbled lanes, and some of them are pedestrian-only in summer. The new town, with Harmanite beach and most of the hotels, has wider streets and the car can stop at the door. Give us the exact address; if you are staying in the old town, the driver will tell you the closest point a car can reach. Let us know in advance if you have a lot of luggage.
Arriving at Sofia Airport
Send us your flight number when you book. We follow the flight, and if it is delayed your driver waits at the airport at no extra cost, however long the delay. Burgas Airport to Sozopol
If you fly into Burgas instead, Sozopol is about 35 km and 45 minutes away: €55 for a car, €75 for a minivan and €90 for a minibus. Flight tracking works the same way.
