From Sofia the car takes the Trakia motorway past Plovdiv, then switches to the Maritsa motorway towards Turkey. The last stretch to Haskovo is a road heading south. Kardzhali is about 50 km further south, where the road climbs into the Eastern Rhodopes and gets more winding. That is why 230 km to Haskovo take about 2 h 30 min, while 280 km to Kardzhali take about 3 h 15 min.

Plovdiv – Kardzhali: short but hilly
Plovdiv and Kardzhali are only about 95 km apart, but the road crosses the Rhodope hills and is not a motorway, so the trip takes about 1 h 45 min. Plovdiv to Haskovo is about 80 km and 1 h 30 min, €70 by car. If you are flying into Plovdiv Airport, tell us when you book.
