The route on the map

From Sofia Airport and the city the car takes the Struma motorway south past Pernik, Dupnitsa and Blagoevgrad to Simitli. There it turns east and climbs the Predel pass, then drops straight into Razlog. It is the shortest way and the same road continues to Bansko.

From Plovdiv the road goes via Pazardzhik and Velingrad, then over Yundola and through Yakoruda to Razlog. It is quieter, with more bends through the forest.

• Sunday afternoon. Weekend skiers all head back to Sofia and the motorway slows down.
• Holiday weeks. Around Christmas, New Year and mid-February, book as soon as you know your dates.
