Varna Archaeological Museum is one of the most interesting places to see in Bulgaria. It was established in 1887 by two Czech brothers - Karel and Herman Shkorpil.
The building in itself is quite extraordinary, as it was originally built to serve as a Girls’ High School with very long corridors decorated with wall paintings. It has a New Renaissance Architectural style and is shaped as a square with a large internal courtyard.
Varna Archeological Museum has one of the largest and richest collections in Bulgaria with over 100,000 objects varying from ceramics and weapons to icons and jewellery. The exhibits are from many and different eras such as Middle Ages, Ottoman Period and Prehistory.
One of the most popular exhibits in the Archaeological Museum is the Gold of Varna, which is known as the oldest gold treasure in the world dating back to 4000 BC. The treasure has around 2000 golden objects and a total weight of 5.5 kg. The Museum also manages the Roman Baths in Varna, which are the next stop of your day tour.
The Roman Thermae in Varna are absolutely outstanding as they are the largest roman baths in the Balkans and the fourth biggest in the world. Constructed during the 2nd century AD, they cover an area of 7,000 square meters and were part of the ancient town Odessus.
The ruins of the construction, which was shaped as an arch are located in the central part of Varna. The walls are thick and were supposed to be as high as 20 - 22 meters tall. The large hall is located in the middle with other smaller halls, which served different purposes. It is extremely interesting to note that the heating system was formed by double floors and hollows via which the warm air was circulating. Back in the times, the public baths were an important part of the daily life ot the citizens. It is said that people would go to the baths to gossip and discuss important facts from the public life.
